To commemorate the last official school day, upper and middle school students and faculty gathered for the traditional final assembly. Highlights of the morning included the last senior devotions, given by George Chunn and Claire Womack, and the check presentation to Preston Taylor Ministries, this year's school-wide service project.
Students presented PTM Director Chan Sheppard with a check for $20,086 to go toward the purchase of a new bus for the ministry. BA students, faculty, parents, and alumni have spent the year raising funds and volunteering at Preston Taylor through activities such as candy sales, tutoring, hosting sports camps, hosting PTM children for tailgating, working at the Nativity Store, coat and toy drives, game nights at A-Game, trunk-or-treating at Halloween, and several other opportunities.
The following awards and scholarships were also presented during the final assembly:
Crawford Smith Award - Niko Amitrano '14. This award is presented in memory of Crawford Smith '97, a Brentwood Academy student who was known for his determination, positive attitude, character and willingness to learn. Crawford knew that there was no obstacle that could not be overcome with hard work. His "can do" attitude earned the respect of his peers and teachers.
Bill Baron Award - Maren Kreid '14. Bill Baron, a former faculty member, was head of the math department, taught chemistry and physics, and was an assistant football coach. A graduate of the US Naval Academy, he had an amazing memory and problem-solving ability. He was best known for his selfless love for people, his humility and his servant's heart, all of which were rooted in his love for the Lord. The award is given in his memory to honor "the athlete who displays outstanding service and spirit and is the ultimate team player." Upper School Director Paul Compton and Athletic Director Cody White presented the award to Maren.
Louis Bullard Memorial Scholarship - Tyra Avery '14 and Jonah Reels '14. Louis Bullard was a member of the BA Board of Trustees who passed away following a long battle with cancer. The scholarships, given in his memory, go to those students who possess the same qualities that Louis displayed during the last months of his life--humility, perseverance, selflessness and faith. Headmaster Curt Masters presented the award to Tyra and Jonah.
Brian Ralls Memorial Scholarship - Aubrey Collins '14. Brian Ralls '05 was a three-letter athlete while at BA and an excellent student. He passed away in 2009 as a result of an accident involving a driver who was distracted on a cell phone. Headmaster Curt Masters presented the award to Aubrey who, like Brian, is an excellent student/athlete and embodies BA's triangle philosophy of developing the whole person--body, mind and spirit--to the glory of God.
Liam Hoover Memorial Awards - Kenndy Jarvis '18 and Toby Wilson '18. Liam Hoover left his mark on Brentwood Academy as a sixth and seventh grader while undergoing treatment for brain cancer. He embodied the mission of the school by challenging himself in body, mind, and spirit to the glory of God. He is remembered as being strong and responsible academically. He always had a smile and a kind word. His strength was evident in his love and praise of God. The award honors his spirit and is given to an eighth grade boy and girl each year who have shown character attributes associated with Liam. Middle School Director Nancy Brasher presented the awards.
