Fine Arts at Brentwood Academy

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO PURSUE FINE ARTS AT BA?

 We offer more than 30 performance and visual arts opportunities for both middle school and upper school students. With multiple performances and showcases within each branch of the fine arts department each year, students can train, progress, and flourish in their chosen discipline.

ACADEMY JUNIORS

The Academy Juniors are Brentwood Academy's extracurricular, auditioned vocal ensemble for middle school chorus students. The performance group is intended for students who wish to further their vocal music experience and training. 

ACADEMY SINGERS

Brentwood Academy’s premier mixed vocal ensemble is known as The Academy Singers. This auditioned group features 12-16 talented students who expand their knowledge of music theory, sight-reading, ear training, and the use of their vocal instrument, including proper tone, breath control, posture, blending, and diction. The primary focus of the group is advanced a cappella music, often featuring eight or more parts. In addition to live shows, The Academy Singers produce an annual CD that is highly anticipated.

BAND

Brentwood Academy utilizes a sectional approach to band education. There are three bands in the concert band tract: Beginning Band, Intermediate Band, and Concert Band. Students are divided among four music instructors for woodwinds, upper brass, lower brass, and percussion to receive specialized attention in a small group setting. In band, students learn to read music and develop skills applicable to musical performance, composition, and improvisation. In addition to the concert band, there are two auditioned groups, Jazz Ensemble and Contemporary Music Ensemble (Rock Band), that allow students to experience and perform a wide range of music.

CHORUS

Brentwood Academy offers three chorus sections: 6th-grade chorus, combined Chorus 7 and 8, and upper school chorus. Students in chorus not only prepare music for performances, but also learn the disciplines of proper vocal technique, sight-singing, ear-training, and music history to support group performances. The primary goal of the BA chorus program is to encourage students to be well-rounded, self-sufficient musicians with a passion and love for singing.

SPEECH & DEBATE

Through speech classes and our competitive speech and debate team, The Eloquent Eagles, students develop the speaking and acting skills that allow them to become confident communicators in any arena. Students prepare, memorize, and present various types of dramatic material, competing locally and nationally against the finest high school speakers in the United States.

Tournaments, such as those held at Harvard, Wake Forest, and Emory University, prepare students for the highest level of competition. Brentwood Academy has a strong history of excellence in a variety of events, including Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Original Oratory, Impromptu Speaking, Prose, and Poetry.

THEATER

Brentwood Academy offers both set design and theater arts classes, as well as a multitude of performance opportunities for students in both middle school and upper school. Students in the theater program showcase their talents and learned skills as performers, AV techs, set designers, hair/makeup techs, stagehands, lighting designers, and well-rounded artists. Students have multiple opportunities to "break a leg" through three major theater productions each year: the fall play, the middle school play/musical, and the upper school musical.

VISUAL ARTS

The visual arts program at Brentwood Academy is designed to nurture students' talents and abilities at all levels, while teaching the fundamentals of art, encouraging exploration of the elements and principles of design, and providing a foundation for the development of their artistic voices. In class, students engage with a wide array of 2D and 3D disciplines, including drawing, painting, printmaking, digital design, photography, sculpture, and ceramics.
