At Brentwood Academy, we believe that each student has unique God-given talents and abilities, and we are committed to helping students discover and explore those gifts to their fullest potential. A dedicated fine arts faculty of 19 full-time and part-time instructors offers more than 30 visual and performing arts opportunities for our students. Outstanding facilities give our students the necessary platform for exceptional classroom and performance experiences.

The Academy Singers

Audition information for the 2014-2015 Academy Singers (PDF)

The Academy Singers is an auditioned vocal ensemble of sixteen students who have the unique opportunity to record a professional quality CD each year.  The ensemble also produces a live stage show and performs for various church and community groups throughout the year. Emphasis is placed on a cappella singing and a variety of pop musical styles. Auditions are held each spring for the following school year.

Legacy

The Academy Singers recently released Legacy, a two-volume CD of 40 memorable Academy Singers' songs.  This collection is a tribute to Academy Singers alumni from 1989 - 2011 and includes several remixed and remastered selections. Learn more here.

Band

Band 

Our Concert Band program utilizes a sectional approach to music education. Students are divided among four music instructors for woodwinds, upper brass, lower brass and percussion to receive specialized attention in a small group setting. When ready, students are then combined for a full band experience. 

Students learn to read music and develop skills that can be applied to areas such as musical performance, composition, and improvisation.  In addition to concert band, there are two auditioned groups, Jazz Band and Contemporary Music Ensemble (Rock Band), that allow students to experience a wide range of music.

Our choral program focuses on performing a variety of musical styles including Pop, Gospel, Jazz and Classical genres. Emphasis is given to learning proper vocal technique including tone quality, breath control, posture, blending and diction within a choral setting. Music theory, sight-reading, and ear training are also important components to the development of overall choral musicianship.

 

 

Dance

Dance

The dance program offers a studio approach to quality training in a variety of styles including jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary, and hip hop genres. Whether a student is a serious dancer or just a beginner, there is a place within the program exists where a student can improve technique at any level. Dance is a semester-long course and receives P.E. credit.

The Academy Dancers

Serious dancers who want to further their dance experience and training outside the Dance P.E. class may audition for The Academy Dancers in the spring of each year. Both the Upper School and Middle School Academy Dancers train year-round and perform at football and basketball games, as well as pep rallies and regional competitions.

Forensics

Forensics

Forensics is competitive speech and debate. Our students develop the speaking and acting skills that allow them to become confident communicators in any arena. Students prepare, memorize, and present various types of dramatic material, competing locally and nationally against the finest high school speakers in the United States. Tournaments at Harvard, Wake Forest and Emory Universities prepare students for the highest level of competition. Traditionally, Brentwood Academy has excelled in a variety of events such as Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Original Oratory, Impromptu Speaking, Prose, and Poetry.
 

2013 National Forensics Tournament Results

Eleven middle school students and six upper school students competed in the finals at the National Forensics Tournament in Birmingham. The middle school was awarded the School of Excellence Award and had eight students compete in the finals. Lexie Harvey '14 finished third in the nation in Expository for the upper school. Musicals

Spring Musical

As many as 60 or more students with differing levels of performance experience participate each year in mounting a spectacular spring musical filled with many opportunities for singing, dancing and acting. The upper school musical supports a large cast and crew and is known for producing audience favorites such as Hairspray, Beauty and the Beast, Oklahoma! Fiddler on the Roof, Oliver! and Guys and Dolls.

Students perform in a variety of principal and supporting roles and serve on technical and stage crews for each show. Upper school students may elect to enroll in Set Design or Theatre Arts classes which construct the set and props for the production. Performances are presented in April, and rehearsals are typically three nights a week from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Auditions are held in December.

Plays

Plays

The upper school fall play is presented in November of each year, with rehearsals three nights a week from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.  The fall play is a straight show (no music) and is generally a small to medium-sized cast. The show can be a serious drama like The Diary of Anne Frank or The Miracle Worker, or a light comedy such as The Man Who Came to Dinner. Auditions are held in September.

The middle school play is presented in February, with rehearsals three days a week from 3:15 – 5:15 p.m. The Middle School Play supports a large cast and is typically based on a literary classics like Tom Sawyer, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. Auditions are held in October.
