POW! Problem of the Week

Week #3

August 30, 2010

Tracie is making a pattern using circles, as shown below. The first figure uses 1 circle and contains 1 “individual” space (an individual space is a space that is not divided into smaller spaces by other circles), while the third figure uses 3 circles and contains 7 individual spaces. How many individual spaces are contained in the figure that uses 12 circles?

Here is the POW for Week 2.  It's answer will be posted on September 4.

On the final there were 50 questions. Of the questions, 5 were short answer/essay style questions (the rest were multiple choice). The teacher recommended devoting as much time to one short answer/essay question as you would 10 multiple-choice questions. If the class had 120 minutes to take the final exam and you plan to use all of your time, how much time should be devoted to each short answer/essay question, based on the teacher's recommendation? Express your answer to the nearest minute.

Send your response to Mrs. Bonnie Hall.  Answers will be given at the end of each week.
